How can I verify information on mesothelioma?

November 27, 2009

You have probably seen ads on TV that certain law groups want you to call them. I often wonder if the attorneys benefit from these class action lawsuits more than the victim. At least investigate other sources of compensation first.

Actually, the mesoblog’s website cautions against responding to TV commercials and billboard ads. The page on legal advice is reasonable.

How can you get insulation tested for asbestos mesothelioma?

November 26, 2009

If you have asbestos insulation then this is a serious problem. If it’s loose asbestos then this is known as friable asbestos which is a lot more dangerous than asbestos cement or asbestos vinyl floor tiles.

Asbestos fibres can easily float around your house which may be inhaled by you, your family or any visitors. Any to asbestos exposure can lead to mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.

The only real way to know if the insulation contains asbestos or not is to have it laboratory tested. Look in your yellow pages or on the net for suitable asbestos analysis labs.

It may pay to be cautious when gathering a sample as well. Use a proper respirator, don’t stir up too much dust, and seal the sample in a clear plastic bag.

What are the causes and symptoms of mesothelioma?

November 25, 2009

The primary risk factor for developing mesothelioma is asbestos exposure. I believe I saw a statistic, and you know what they say about statistics, that said 80% of mesothelioma diagnoses are related to asbestos exposure. This does sound about right. Certain exposures to radiation also are known to develop mesothelioma. Here are some of the symptoms taken from beatmesothelioma.blogspot.com

* pain in the lower back or at the side of the chest
* shortness of breath
* difficulty swallowing
* cough
* fever
* fatigue
* abdominal pain, weight loss, and nausea and vomiting (symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma)

Do you know any women who had mesothelioma?

Is it possible that her Mother or father was exposed to asbestos? She may have picked it up from her father (even before birth) or mother.

All patients I have nursed with a mesothelioma were men and men that had worked in some kind of dock lands work or painting/building work.

Working with certain paints in the 1940’sand working in the docks can expose to asbestos.

It is interesting that you mention about the hospital renovations as many old building s did contain asbestos.

What actually symptoms of Mesothelioma?

November 24, 2009

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is primarily caused by exposure to certain types of asbestos, a material once used in building construction. The disease can affect the lungs, the abdomen, or the heart. There are three types of mesothelioma:-

-Pleural: Pleural mesothelioma affects the pleura – the lining of the lungs. It is the most common type of mesothelioma.

-Peritoneal: Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the peritoneum – the lining of the abdomen.

-Pericardial: Pericardial mesothelioma affects the pericardium, the membrane that surrounds the heart. It is the least common type, affecting about 5 percent of people with the disease.
Causes of Mesothelioma

Asbestos exposure is the number one cause for mesothelioma. Asbestos is a fibrous mineral that was once found in many types industrial building supplies and equipment. Asbestos was used until the mid 1970’s when the risks of exposure were becoming evident. It is still used today, yet in a very limited capacity.

Asbestos exposure doesn’t result immediately in cancer. It takes years for the cancer to form and cause symptoms. Workers exposed in the 1950’s, 60’s, and 70’s are just now being diagnosed with mesothelioma.

symptoms of mesothelioma

November 19, 2009

           Mesothelioma is a cancer in which the protective linings of the body’s internal organs get affected by malignant cells. These linings include:

Pleura: the outer lining surrounding the lungs and chest cavity;

Peritoneum: the lining of the abdominal cavity;

Pericardium: a sac holding the heart.

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma (mez-uh-thee-lee-O-muh) is a type of cancer that can be either malignant or benign. The malignant type of mesothelioma is the most hazardous form of cancer and may be deadly in most cases. This cancer affects the tissue known as the mesothelium, which protects the heart, stomach, lungs, and other organs by making a special fluid that allows the organs to move.

Types of Mesothelioma
1. Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma. This is where the cancer affects the lungs and the protective lining and cavity of the lungs filling it with excessive liquid.

2. Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a rarer form of mesothelioma where the cancer affects the stomach and abdomen. Symptoms include some or all of the following: abdominal pain and swelling, nausea, loss of appetite, chest pain, anemia, fever, and blood clotting abnormalities.

3. Pericardial Mesothelioma is the rarest form of mesothelioma cancer. This is where the cancer affects the heart and the cavity that surrounds it, known as the pericardium. Patients have reported chest pain, shortness of breath, trouble breathing, persistent coughing, and palpitations.

Causes of Mesothelioma (symptoms of mesothelioma)
        Almost always this type of cancer is caused by previous exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a kind of fiber present in a lot of the insulating and building substances which are naked to the human eye. It is unclear how early the correlation between asbestos and mesothelioma was made.

Mesothelioma is a very aggressive form of cancer where early diagnosis increases the amount of effective treatments. Unfortunately, due to the way it forms, the cancer may not manifest until anywhere between 20 to 50 years after an asbestos exposure. Regardless of when the asbestos exposure occurred, it is important to tell your doctor so that the correct diagnosis can be made.

As with most diseases, symptoms of mesothelioma vary case by case. Symptoms can also be determined by whether the mesothelioma is defined as pleural, peritoneal, or pericardial.
